I read the article, didn't have a clue who many of the folks were, but this thought struck me - are these people that Mattis knows, through experience with them, focus on the mission and not the politics?

Sounds like Mattis is more interested in putting the right people in the right place regardless of political affiliation. If the GOP wants to whine about it, maybe they can whip their house in order on the American Health Care thing where they have something like 26 defectors.
Let big boys go get real work done while the kids in the suits might wanna play grown up and go get some legislation accomplished now that they have the house, senate and big chair. Christ it's like sending a kid to the store with $10 to buy a six pack of coke and he comes home with three two liter bottles of Sprite and a snickers.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.
Chuck, we miss ya man.

Trump will not let Mattis appoint anyone who was openly hostile to him during the GOP Primary. Mattis doesn't want GOP hacks which is understandable to some extent. What is left is Obama appointees and Hillary supporters. Enjoy.
Reportedly, the same thing is going on over at State where Tillerson's pick for his #2 was blocked by Trump because he was critical of the hairdo or something.

These leaks and allegations of spying are making him paranoid against anyone who's not been on Team Trump since day one.
It's too bad, but it's probably to be expected at this juncture. He's taking the bait.
These cabinet positions need to be independent of micro managing, but it would appear that might take a minute.
I am glad Trump vetoed Elliott Abrams as the #2 man at state, he is part of the swap, that needs drained. And a Never Trumper
Just a sample of Abrams:
Most damaging to Abrams appears to be a historical piece he wrote comparing the 2016 election to 1972 and counseling Republicans to voice their objections to Trump.
“Do not allow the Republican convention to be a coronation wherein Trump and Trumpism are unchallenged,” Abrams wrote in a piece for the conservative Weekly Standard. “The party needs to be reminded that there are deep divisions, and Trump needs to be reminded of how many in the party oppose and even fear his nomination.”

"Real men have always needed to know what time it is so they are at the airfield on time, pumping rounds into savages at the right time, etc. Being able to see such in the dark while light weights were comfy in bed without using a light required luminous material." -Originally Posted by ramairthree
I was being a little carcastic about the hairdo. Actually, Abrams would probably be pretty caustic in a Trump administration. Still, one would think that Trump and Tillerson would have a private call about who is kosher instead of having Tillerson's choices publicly shot down.

What if this whole crusade's a charade?
And behind it all there's a price to be paid
For the blood which we dine
