There are some screaming good deals to be had out there on basic Colt 1991 Series 1911's, especially the 5" blued models:
A few years ago, these things were regularly selling for over $850, but I've seen them as low as $650 lately. They also have versions that come in .38 Super and 9mm if that's your thing. I've got a stainless model in .45 and it's one of my favorite guns.
Oh yeah. In Sep 2014 I paid a tad over a 1,000.00 for my basic Colt O1970A1CS from Buds. That was a decent price at the time.

Don't go for a Phillipines 1911. If you have a nice 1911, you will not be satisfied in the long run. If plain Jane on a budget is what you want, scour local ads, gunshow, classifieds for a milspec Springfield.
