    AK74: Issue or not?

I tried asking this on the AKfiles forum, worthless responses.

    Arsenal SLR104 w/Ultimak rail

When unloaded, I can pull my bolt back with ease and it will return to battery everytime.

When loading, I pull the bolt back on a full magazine and then release the bolt, it goes into battery like normal.

Here's the problem: When loaded, I will attempt to do a press check with the safety still on. I pull the bolt back to the safety and then release it, but it will only travel 1/2-3/4 of the way before it stops and I have to force it back into battery. Sometimes, I can't even pull the bolt back without considerable force.

The gun is clean and liberally lubed. When unloaded the bolt moves smoothly. When loaded I have issues. What is going on?

ETA: The guys on AKfiles said just don't press check anymore. My WASR handles press checks just fine. Even if I didnt press check anymore, trying to unload the rifle is very tough sometimes because pulling the bolt back on a loaded chamber is very hard.

I would guess it's mainly due to extractor tension. I wouldn't worry about it, at all assuming it functions fine.

    Is the rifle newer?

Ya, only 300rds down the pipe so far. Haven't shot it since I noticed this issue. I've owned a Saiga and Wasr both in x39 and never had this kind of issue.

Not sure it was specifically designed to press check with the safety engaged.

If it were me, I'd click the safety off, chamber check, the re engage the safety if you are so inclined. It's kind of like me wanting to press check an old winchester lever action, I don't think the design is accommodating to the desired action.

Even old ARs without a forward assist can give you problems if you want to do a press check / brass check.

The guys on the akfiles are right. I've never read anything about an ak being designed for ammo peeking.

Sounds like you might have a new barrel that headspaced a little tight. This method of press checking is one of the few nice things on the AK and should work just fine. OP, are you only able to retract the carrier / charging handle about 1/4" before you meet resistance? The carrier isn't unlocking the bolt until you draw it back past that. It might be that your cartridge's bullet is stuck in the lands of the barrel's rifling. Next time you get a chance, perform the press check and if you run into the problem eject the cartridge and examine the bullet. Are there pronounced marks on it where it was engaging the rifling? If so that's likely your issue.
