Meh. For some reason I have zero interest in a 556 AK. I like AKs, just not 556. No real reason, just never had an interest in them. Don't have much interest in a 308 AK either. My 545 does everything I need/want. I bought a lot of surplus when it was cheap. .....And it's still not that expensive.

On the other hand I wouldn't mind a 556 Galil or Valmet. Maybe a the Polish Baryl

    Nothing lame about it.

It's the most durable rifle on the planet coupled with the most widespread domestic caliber.

This is what had me ask the question as I was literally in gun shops the week 7n6 got banned looking for a 74. A 74u in fact.

Now I really don't want a "U" chambered in 7.62 as I want my son to be able to shoot it too.

I remember when Arsenal discontinued their 106's and I was thinking it didn't matter because they were useless anyways being chambered in 5.56. I had the same mentality that commie guns should run commie bullets, now I wish they were still producing the 106's so I can get the Arsenal SLR-106U so I can form 1 it.

I even saw a interview with Jim Fuller saying the same thing, he keeps a 5.56 in the back of his closet for the day they stop importing the 762 he can still shoot a AK even if it is in 5.56 because he know he'll always be able to get ammo for it.

Yeah, lame wasn't my first choice of words. I originally said gay but I felt like it might be offensive to the gays, so I switched it.

They discontinued the 106 because AK's running cheaper import ammo were more popular. Problem is when SHTF- you got a bunch of rifles that rely on import ammo. I guarantee I have more foreign AK ammo than 95% of the people on this board- and I'd still, even now, even when I stacked that shit for 10 cents a round- would trade it all for more domestic ammo and more SLR 106 AK's. Look at my user name and I'm saying- if you are buying an AK these days, get one in 5.56NATO.

That's my intent now, I'll pay the $50 per mag if it means I can still be shooting it in 20 years.

You can use Beryl 556 mags also- which are cheaper. Mine are mostly Bulgarian, a few Russian, and some Polish mags I bought to test out.

I have a right to my opinion even if it differs from yours. You seem to take offense that many people are uninterested in AKs chambered NATO rounds. In case you forgot, that's what the thread is asking about, so if anyone should be taking a walk...

Like Steyr pointed out earlier, many people, including myself, feel it's ideologically wrong. I prefer a firearm be chambered for the ammo it was originally intended for.

In addition, I don't buy firearms based on the cost of its respective ammo. In fact, that's probably one of the least important factors to me.

So 5.56NATO AK's like the Russian AK 101, Polish Beryl 96, the Israeli's Galil, Chinese 84s, Finnish Valmets, Serbian M85, Bulgarian 106 or M series etc.- are "ideologically" wrong.

Preference is one thing but the manufacturers disagree- they'll build rifles in NATO calibers as well as the original Soviet calibers.

Look at this page, Arsenal builds guns primarily in 5.56NATO and 7.62x39.

However now, it's all priced the same so all things being equal- I'd rather have a rifle chambered in the same caliber as most of my other rifles, 5.56NATO. I'd trade my entire collection of 5.45 and 7.62 AK's along with all the ammo I have with them, just for a few extra 5.56 AK rifles and a bunch of ammo that all my AUG's, AR's, and 5.56 AK's can eat from the same stash.

The point is if imports cease, we still have domestic production. I didn't buy my AKs because the ammo was cheap, I bought them because they were AKs. And domestic AK ammo will never cost as much as say Match Grade .308 so I guess there is no point to my bolt rifles.

I have NATO rifles, I have Warsaw rifles. I have ammo for both, I can get ammo for both, I'm not worried about ever not being able to get ammo for both. But from time to time I do worry about the long term availability of .357 SIG because I have one. I still remember when .41AE was going to be the new wonder round.
