I went through a government employee ethics class in Basic Training. And apparently remembered more of it than a DOJ lawyer can.

Avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest or misuse of your position.

There was something on the radio about Flynn not having the assets to fight the charges.
Essentially he quit trying to defend himself because he was going broke.

Yep, same thing I read. Basically he had blown through all his money and they were threatening to go after his son. According to the article I read he is in the process of selling his home due to finances.
