Surefire 762 SOCOM MINI Experiences on .308...weigh in

I am planning to run a 762 SOCOM MINI on a 16" .308. How does this sound? (the combo, not the idea).

How does it compare to a 16" 5.56 with a SOCOM 5.56 MINI? Louder? Quieter?

Can you pop off a few rounds without your ears ringing? I know it's not medically advised, but outdoors is it do-able without any real cringing?

Have one in NFA jail that should be out any week now. I bought it for AK with some 300Blk use primarily, but will try it on a standard 308 when it comes home. Considering the size and volume, it probably would have a bit of a disadvantage over the 300SPS (mine is relatively good with sound reduction for 308) or the 762RC/RC2. I think Surefire published some data on this in one of their silencer brochures, but I don't think they listed data with 308 for the mini.

I really like what it does to reduce the blast disruption.
    Hearing safe, no.
Similar goes with the 5.56 16" AR with their versions of the 5.56 models.
It does fill a role well though.

I own both a 556RC and the 762 Mini, and on 5.56 16" barrel lengths, I cannot tell a difference between the two.

16" 308 is earth shattering loud in my opinion, so anything that will reduce that is nice, but the 762 Mini is not hearing safe, by any stretch of the imagination. You may be able to get away with a few rounds, depending on how bad your hearing already is.

Is it louder or quieter than a 16" 5.56 with a socom 556 mini?

So you would rather shoot a 16" .308 with 762 SOCOM MINI than you would a 16" 5.56 with a 556 SOCOM MINI, without ears, if minimal hearing damage was your goal?

    WS6. I don't have a 762-mimi, but do own a 762-RC, 300SPS, Saker 762 and an Omega.

After talking with a couple SF reps, they really steered me away from the mini. I would only go that route if OAL was of maximum importance. Instead of going with the 762-mini, I went with a 14.5" pinned barrel with a Saker. This gives me the same OAL, with better blast/sound reduction.... add a Law Tactical folder, and you have a very nimble platform.

If you didn't want to pin and weld a barrel, you could go with a direct thread Omega (6" OAL) or the 300SPS which is shorter than then full size 762-RC, and sounds a lot better than the mini.

Ideally, I would love for SF to release a 300SPS-mini... but I'm not going to hold my breathe.

I have both cans, and the MINI has a different baffle design than the RC, that I can see literally just by looking at it. It is my OPINION that the RC was shooting for .300WM contract use, and that it was designed to deal with those pressures, so it may explain why it's not so hot on .308 (meters in the mid 140's on independent tests I've seen, although SF claims lower).

NOONE has metered a 762 MINI, so who knows?
