What ammo for bcm 14.5 lw bbl @ 300 yds?

Did a bit of research and wasnt able to find a consensus on whether to go with the lighter stuff to compensate for lost velocity of the shorter bbl or go with heavier stuff that is supposedly stabilized better even at lower velocity. I have a 1-6x scope on top. Want to see what it can do at 300. Anyone else who has a bcm 14.5 lw middie bbl, feel free to chime in on what ammo brand/weight/type you would go with for this application and why.

Honestly, 300yds is well within the capability of standard 55gr XM193 or 62gr M855. Granted neither of those rounds are match rounds but both should have no problem hitting standard sized targets at that range. If you want something better I found that Prvi 75gr is a very good balance between affordability and accuracy.

The 64 gr. Gold Dot shoots well from mine at 300 yds.

I was going to wait and get some more responses but I found Molon's write up on the PPU 75gr match and for the price I figured id give it a try. Sportsmans guide had free shipping so I got 100 rds of the stuff for $54 otd. Cant beat that if its as good as they say it is. I also have gobs of xm193 to try out for shits and giggles. As for the gold dot, I didnt know they even had a line of rifle ammo... Not a bad price on that either.

    300 isn't too tough really.

That said, I've found MarkM's recipe for 77gr Noslers (H322) to be pretty accurate out of my BCM 14.5" lightweight.

Mk318 if you don't want to roll your own. It is optimized for the M4's 14.5" barrel.

It all depends on what your barrel likes. I have friends that shoot high power (at Camp Perry) who have told me not to waste my time reloading 5.56 unless I'm going to shoot over 300 or I really enjoy sitting in front of the press. They all say the standard 55 and 62 grain fodder is accurate enough out to 300.

I'd normally say 77 gr all the way. But we've been shooting some 5.56mm TMKs from Black Hills, and inside of 640 yards, the 69 gr shoots amazing. I'd ball park that at 500 yards, the 69 gr needs about 5 inches less come up than the 77 gr TMK 556 load.

We're still just getting started with testing the ammo, but it looked like at 640 yards, the 77 and 69 gr TMK 556mm are starting to run neck and neck.

    1. What 10-shotgroup size are you trying to achieve in real life?

    2. What do you want the gun to be capable of?

    3. Every barrel is a law unto itself (thanks molon). Yours may like 55gr. It may like 77gr.

However, at that distance 60gr vmax or any good 6x gr otm will perform well. Put it over a good load.

If you don't reload, get some Cbc 77gr and call it a day. You should be shooting 5" groups or less at that range. What more do you want?

BCM BFH 14.5 LW - 100 Yards - 9 rounds - The three in the red box were adjustments.
CBC 77gr (Mk262 clone). I've had similar results with IMI 77gr.
