I certainly have all the tools I need. Being I already have a Colt I wanted to build something from the ground up. The Aero M4E1 is basically a complete upper minus the barrel which is fine to me. I'm just struggling to decide on what length I want to go with. I generally don't throw a ton of accessories on my rifles so I may just go with the 7" or the 9" but I don't know if I want to do an A2 iron sight or not on the front.

I read almost all of the posts like this and wait for the inevitable train wreck. The brands you mention don't get much love here and mostly for good reasons which get spelled out every time. Budget AR's are just that, budget AR's... until they're not. Lots of folks "want" a simple, inexpensive AR and then end up draging it through the Brownells catalog with a crap magnet.

Short of a "Designated Survivor" type event, the fear of bans and further restriction are mostly a distant memory. No need to rush out and buy anything; save, shop and compare.

I've got an older, perhaps ten year old Spikes lower that hosts a "Frankenbuild" plethora of parts. BCM 16" upper, Midwest Industries rail, Geisselle Trigger, and an AimPoint Pro, though it is not my got to gun for emergency uses, it keeps chugging right along.
I'm not sure if Spikes quality dropped off or if they have issues with specifications varying, but for a while they were the only game in town during the bad old days.
It was my first AR and other than the lower and the upper remaining every other part has been swapped out over the years. Some here might question their quality and perhaps I just got really lucky, but it's done right by me.
I have no idea how many rounds have went down that barrel, but since I've owned it I have had only one issue and that I attribute to crappy Russian ammo and a dirty chamber, so my bad.
In todays market and with everything I've put together since I have stuck with BCM parts and been very satisfied.

Yeah I hear you. This will be my first build. My go to rifle will always be my LE6920. Had it for a while now and I never had issues with it whatsoever and don't plan to ever get rid of it. You said you have a BCM upper so I'm assuming you have a BCM barrel as well correct? I was looking at the BCM M4 socom 16" barrel myself.

Do we have evidence to show that spikes parts are inferior, or do we hate them for the fun of it?

I'm curious about this myself. I shot a friends AR he built with a spikes lower and we didn't have any issues and he still has it still to this day. I personally have only owned Smith and Wesson and Colt ARs.

This. ^^^^ If you want to build for the sake of build, cool, go for it. If you want a tool for HD, why not buy an quality assembled upper that has been test fired?
