As the original poster I am happy the thread has moved into the broader topic of terminology.

I also see room to discuss the idea of builds that are retro looking with discrete modern improvements in technology. Triggers, materials, coatings and such have improved since Nam. But for my KISS philosophy of use, the old school furniture and fixef front sight and carry handle are still all I want.

Pretty much the same goes for me.

That's exactly what my goal was with this build:

Looks retro at a glance and from afar, but it has:
    - Colt 1/7 twist barrel
    - Ambi selector, mag release and charging handle
    - LMT enhanced bolt. slick side chromed carrier
    - Hiperfire EDT trigger
    - A2 rear sight and National Match A2 .050" front sight post (narrower)
    - Griffin Armament SOB buffer, Griffin XM Linear Comp
    - 6-position Vltor buffer tube instead of 2-position
