    Pre-1898 gun NFA question

Does anything go as far as pre-1898 guns?

I'm guessing you can't make/buy machine guns. But can you change caliber? Shorten rifle/shotgun barrels under 16/18 inches? Neither?

    Just curious.

I've been told you can't do anything that would come under the term 'manufacture', as that then changes the classification.

In my case this involved Stevens tip-up pistols w/ long barrels, where the original date of manufacture is suspect due to the loss of records after Savage Arms acquired Stevens and the early records were tossed.

Nothing interesting. A pre 1898 single shot shotgun. If it's cut down under 18 inches is it still an antique non-firearm or become NFA?

Then I started wondering about other pre-1898 guns.
