Wasn't the FN semi auto M-16 pretty much a hobby rifle?

It was entirely, and it wasn't even correct. I'm sure their FAL would likely be the same. My guess would be they contract it out like they did with the AR. My second guess is that it will be a built by DSA type II with FN markings and sell for $4000-5000.

If we are lucky, they may be Imbel forged and American finished type III clones (kind of like how Springfield did their TRP 1911 frames). Regardless, I wouldn't hold my breath.

    I'm fine either way.

I have a bunch of DSA rifles built with Steyr parts and barrels and I have an Imbel on Imbel rifle so I'm mostly gtg when it comes to FALs. I wouldn't mind one or two more if correct versions were available.

If FN could make a correct 50.63 para I would be all over it. Until then I would have to stick with DSA.

If you understand what the FAL is, it is easy to appreciate its virtues. It really is too bad that 308 ammo is so expensive...

Hell yes. Just understand it's limitations. Not as ergo as the M4 platform. Not optic friendly, due to mounting options. Trigger options don't exist. There are scope cover and handguard options from different manufacturers. The grip can be replaced with a SAW style grip.

Other than that, owning a DSA 16" STG-58 Para has been a blast. I have no regrets with my purchase. The rifle has sentimental value for me, so I would never get rid of it. I had the opportunity to run a SCAR H a few years ago and I saw no reason to own one because of the STG-58. I understand that the SCAR would correct a lot of the issues listed above, but I could not find a reason that would justify the purchase, especially at SCAR H prices.

I agree with many others here. If you can find a gently used STG-58 then it would be a good purchase. Unfortunately, DSA's quality has dropped from what I've heard since the Steyr parts kits dried up.

The cost of .308 ammo is an issue, but I don't know too many .308 owners that do mag dumps with their guns. The FAL can be a pleasure to shoot when tuned.

The trigger can be tuned fairly easily by swapping trigger return springs. It won't be as good as a giessele trigger but pretty good for a battle rifle.

Everybody should have at least one FAL (hopefully a good factory rifle)---I've owned three---two factory Argie standard metric rifles and an FN factory "308 match" standard FAL---all three worked beautifully---easily the softest recoiling 308 rifle made---accuracy is more than good enough, just not target rifle grade---picked up a bunch of Israeli marked metric 20 rd mags back in the day for $3 a copy---still using them with no issues. During a career change, many moons ago, I sold the two Argies, but kept the FN---still shoot it regularly...

    For rifles,
    My preference is the AR.
    My second is the AK.
I occasionally get something different, like a SIG 556.

I am usually disappointed with something like an UZI, HK91, Garand, M1 carbine, AUG, FN-49, SVD, etc.
They fall into the very cool to want, neat to have, but a pain in the ass to set up, run, sight in, etc.
I like them and they are cool, but end up being more of a toy to play with than a useful tool.

I have not scratched the itch on many things, like a SS folding stock mini 14, M14, FAL, etc. Because of this.

    But,
If I were to do so with a FAL,
What would be a good model, version to look into.
If you want a complete rifle look for a SAR-48. They can still be had new in the box. I bought one recently from gunbroker. Another good choice is an early DSA StG 58. Many were built with NOS parts and their receiver was made by LMT. A kit built by a reputable smith is a good purchase as well. No need to spend a bunch for an FN unless you're a collector. In fact the StG 58 and the IMBEL rifles were better than an actual FN.

I own two FN Para 50.63's. I wouldn't buy one made by DSA though unless FN produced the barrel.
