    M16A2 clone Redo

A couple years ago, I built my second M16A2 clone. It has now had a mild redo. A couple months ago, along with a member of another forum, we embarked on getting custom M16A2 marked lowers made. He approached Black Creek Precision in Jacksonville, FL where he lives. After a few weeks of going back on forth over how everything needs to be laid out, we finally had a proof completed and approved. Several guys jumped in on this group buy. This week, the first M16A2 marked lowers were received by some of those who ordered them. Fortunately, the other guy and myself got the first three (he got two and I got one). They turned out pretty well. Although not 100% correct, they are close enough for most guys.

BTW, that is a real M16 safety selector that I modified (removed center fin).

    That looks great. Good job

Do you know who did the anodizing?

I wish I could've gotten in on such a group buy. I would've jumped on at least one.

Not sure who they use for the anodizing. I do know that it is not done in-house. These were anodized black and I did my magic to make it look gray and give it some wear so that it matched the upper's wear.

    It turned out very well.

If you ever get the chance to inquire please ask them who they use for their anodizing. I might have some stuff to send out for the hard coat process. There's a few places here in Houston that do it but I don't think they have much to do with anything firearms related. Most popular thing here now is cerakoating due to the sale tropical air here in the Gulf Coast.

They do not disclose who does their anodizing. It does appear that it is some outfit that is close to them.

Do you have a do-it-yourself method of "greying" black anodizing?

I have a process that takes some time and effort. First, I spray it down with Gun Scrubber to get all of the oils off of it, then I use super fine steel wool and scrub it until I get close to the desired shade I am looking for. I will then take a piece of fine grit sandpaper and hit the area I want to show some wear. In this case, I wanted to show similar wear to the upper. Afterwards, I will go over it with a Scotch pad and apply a very thin coat of oil and wipe it off.
