I do a ton of offhand shooting and I prefer the rounded-ish style handguard et al the M16. My 308 came with way too long for my use at 15" it could be as short as 10.5 and still cover up the low pro gas block. I don't hang much on my handguard and don't need much rail space just a small section to put a swivel stud adapter or pic rail section for QR swivel mount on the first part of the handguard.
I really like this LaRue handguard...something like this appeals to me even though it has some pic rail on top.
