Quick simple question on 62 gr .223/5.56

I know that M855 is often times criticized heavily as being a poor choice for 5.56 ammunition.

My question is: is 62 gr .223/5.56 all relatively inferior to other grains of .223/556?

Or is the bad reputation only attributed to M855?

    Thanks

The hornady 62 gr HP Boat Tail is a nice shooting bullet. Other than that, I haven't found a 62 gr bullet that's thrilling. I hand load 62 gr FMJ bullets for blaster ammo.

M855 is mediocre because it's accuracy AND lethality BOTH stink.

It's not the bullet grains that make a bullet good or not, rather construction, quality control, and having a rifle setup for the bullet.

    Correct.

There is nothing "wrong" with all 62 gr ammo per se.

Yes correct, that part I understand. I was just wondering if 62 gr happens to be that "oddball" where regardless of material, quality, and construction it just can't be made to work well.

Yeah it seems that there are not many recommendations on good 62 gr ammo. I read/hear most good things about 69 - 77 gr ammo, sometimes 55 gr ammo as well. But yeah, I see people usually skip over 62 gr.

    Thanks

Golly, off the top of my head...

    62 BHA TSX (.223 and 5.56)
    62/64 Speer GDSP
    62/64 Federal TRU
    62 Federal Fusion and MSR
    62/64 Winchester Ranger

All, quite capable of passing tests, stopping bad guys, and filling freezers. Far more common than thought in this thread.

If I think about the 60-62 range, I am fond of the 60 Hornady JSP and Nosler Partition. For a varmint, high-frag round, the 60 V-Max is awesome.

Spot on, to add to it, vmax is very accurate and more common on lighter bullets, no 62gr (just 60). Typically if someone wants match ammo, they go with heavy otms.

A lot of great performing bullets in 62gr, but I just don't think there's a market for 62 gr specificly for match bullets.

60 gr bullets have typically shot ass-achingly WAY off POI on guns zero'd with 77s in my experience. 64 gold dots are great bullets. However, the sucky part of those bullets is getting a good 64 gr zero, and then having a comparable training load that has the same POI. 64 gr Bonded bullets are nice, but too much hastle for me when I can zero and shoot bulk 77 OTMs for less money and wider availability.

In the strict 62 gr realm, there's only one good bullet that I've shot. The above mentioned Hornady HPBT.

Thanks everyone, that pretty much cleared up my confusion.
