Solidly recommend an Arsenal SLR107R for $850 as a first AK. Circle 10 ((10)) manufacturing plant with milspec components chrome lined hammer forged barrel, forged bolt and trunnions. Not a traditional AKM (has 90* gas block instead of the traditional 45*) but if you are looking for a shooter that's not that big of a deal.

As far as the OP..... You have two choices.
    1) buy cheap for an entry level to see if you even want to invest in an AK but be aware that they're harder to sell and don't bring as much money in today's climate
    2) Risk buying expensive and not liking it but it would be easier to sell and hold its value better.

Or just send it to Chris Butler at AK USA and he'll make sure it's done right- which is normally what I do. However back when SAR's were $350, well- we learned to work on them.

    I guess OP's choices are:

    SAR 1's $600-$700.
    Arsenal 107R $850.
Arsenal 107FR $1100+, completely worth it.
Arsenal SAM7R $1100+, nice but heavy.
KBI FEG SA 85M before de-banning, $900, expensive to de-ban because of the furniture but worth it.
FEG AMD 65 with correct 12.5" barrel $800+.

    Lastly,

WASR- scourge of the AK world, truck gun grade, $600.

But if you're looking at the FEG 85 you have to pay attention to the gas tube. There are two types. The standard and the shorter AMD one. Better to get the standard

Yes but it's still somewhat expensive to de-ban but the Romanian flat underside gas block is a perfect match for the original SA 85M gas block. Ironwood makes the furniture.

    Decent assessment.

I went through this recently and ended up with an Arsenal. Shoots great, has the smaller stock. Compact, light weight and nice little thumper to run in the desert. I'm happy with my purchase.

Just to add ..... If you're looking for a folder the 100 series folding stock is probably the most comfortable. The triangle metal and underfolder are less comfortable with the underfolder being the least especially when recoil smacks the thin metal stock into your cheekbone

The 100 series folding stock is essentially a full fixed stock on a hinge

Forget the SAR. Arsenal for the win. WASR for the budget minded. Just get one and shoot the living crap out of it and enjoy.

Here's a SAR 1 that ends in eight minutes for $550. Has the California rad lock which is easily removed in two minutes with a screwdriver.

Ended with 0 bids. I'm sure that BB shit scared off most potential buyers.
