It's still an expensive firearm. I remember when the CA DOC HK94s were introduced to the market about 10 years ago for $1,500, even though that was about half the going rate for a preban it still took almost a year for them completely disappear from the market.
Then there were the HK P7s for $500, last dealer price for a P7M8 was $1200 about 5 years prior to that and it still took a long time for them to get completely cleaned out. Those PSPs were the deal of the decade and now you'd be lucky to find one for $1000.
PJs even brought in some rare and limited edition AUG rifles, took awhile for them to sell out. So while these 551s might be a steal at 1/3 of the price of pre89 imports, there are still a lot of people who realize you can buy 3 Colts for the same price. Once you go over the $1000 price point for a practical carbine, you probably loose the interest of 3/4s of the shooting community.
And when they are gone, they are gone and prices will adjust accordingly. It's the same with NFA stuff, I remember buying Powder Springs M-10s for about $1,000, then somebody had to go and invent that damn LAGE upper which made everyone jump on the M-10 bandwagon and now they go for $7,000 pretty easy.
Really wish I had kept one but I thought I was making a killing when I flipped a bunch for $1,000 more than I paid for them.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.
Chuck, we miss ya man.
