My 553 is so bad ass. It can be carried in a book size back pack. It hits out to 250 easy. I put a 4 posion gas valve in it and it makes a great suppressor host. I loaded up some sub sonics and the hit poa out to 100.

To the best of my knowledge, ALL 550/551/552/553 series are 5.56.

    -1 is a 1/10 twist
    -2 is a 1/7 twist

Your receiver is likely unmarked because no barrel has ever been attached to it so it hasn't been designated as a 551-1 or 551-2. I would think the barrel twist should be on the barrel someplace, but I've never had a "replacement part set" such as those sold by CCF years ago.

Also the Swiss have their own special weight 5.56 designed around the 1/10 twist barrel. It's hard to find these days but it should throw ordinary .55 gr. ammo just fine. Really wish there was a way to
get a 18" LB swiss rifle imported, it's probably the perfect middle ground carbine IMO.
    Thanks again !

Receiver is designated - SG 551-1 SP.

All components are brand new !

I stand humbly corrected. But I still want it. I just love SAN stuff.

I dunno if they would/could release a straight 550 upper that is full size but it would ge great. I'd love a good, honest 550 rifle like the Swiss have.

I know Swiss gun culture gets romanticised a bit too much on the web and that dudes dont be OCing Rifles all day like its cool, but having seen pictures of guys enjoying their 550s has made me want one a full size.

It's not something you see everyone doing everywhere you go. But everywhere you go there is probably somebody with a slung 550 and nobody cares.

It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

I lived in Israel for almost five years. It is not unusual to see soldiers stopping at the supermarket and buying a box of Frosted Flakes, with a slung M-4/Tavor.

    Taint that the truth.
    Keep preaching brother.

I was an original owner of a 550. I thought I was ahead of the curve, when I sold my NIB example to Vollmer's for $2,800.00. I called SOG on the phone and placed an order, for the rifle. The C.S. order-taker asked me, if I wanted the 550 or 551. I had to make a choice ! She asked me which model I prefer.

I also attended the Dallas Shot Show, in 88 or 89 and picked up the green 550/551 SIG brochure. I still have the 550/551 brochure. The Norinco booth had semi-auto factory built Chinese AK-74's displayed. I believe about five are floating around in collector's hands.

All of those CCF imported receivers and kits started as complete brand new 551-1 LB rifles shipped to Canada. They were sold to Larry, disassembled into parts kits and imported into the US back when ATF allowed barrels (before ATF's barrel import ban) and receivers (under "repair/replacement " grounds) to be imported. Only in the US so we have the requirement for caliber marking. All Swiss made 55x are able to shoot 5.56.

    -1 is 1:10 twist.
    -2 is 1:7 twist.

All of Larry's kits were -1.

What suppressor are you using? How is the gas blowback when using the suppressed setting on the 4-pos valve?

Josh. I am using a surefire 6.8 k can (which is the same size as the 556) so its a bit over bore. A double edge sword no doubt. Almost zero gas to the face but fairly loud. On the suppressed setting it shoots softer and throws brass about 2/3 as far as unsupressed on the normal position. Again this slight under function may be due to the oversized bore. It has been 100% reliable.

How much of the noise is attributable to the 6.8 bore vs the 8.9 inch bbl I don't know or care. I can still shoot with plugs. And in a shtf event I would not be incapacitated without hearing protection

I like this set up and I have to believe it would be very similar to using a surefire SB which is also has an over sized bore. If I were to buy a can right now today for it I'd buy a sure fire SB2.

Yeah, that's about how I remember it. Really wish I grabbed a few of those replacement parts kits.
