Again a matter of perspective.
I don't consider $2800-$3500 to be overpriced for a Swiss SIG. Consider what pre-89 550s and 551s cost and these are a real bargain relatively speaking. Also consider the fact that these are not likely to be imported forever. Eventually the current imports will be sought after by collectors and all the fence sitters will say "I should have purchased one when they only cost [insert current market price]".
And more importantly, Swiss SIGs are the only thing I've seen that can compete with a Colt AR in terms of accuracy. I don't own a 416 so I can't offer an opinion there even though I've heard good things about them too.
Reportedly, they are superior to Colt rifles in extreme winter climates in terms of reliability but I'll have to take the word of other experts on that as mine haven't been winter tested much.
I'm assuming they are more reliable than Colt rifles being based upon the AK platform, but honestly I've never had a Colt rifle fail me and I've been shooting mine since about 1981.
But to me they are part of a grouping of "reliable, dependable, accurate" rifles of which Colt, SIGs, HK93s, Valmets and a few others all qualify. If it was just about money, I'd probably buy one AR for half or a third of the cost of some other options. But I'm lucky enough to have other options.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.
Chuck, we miss ya man.
