I may get two but that would require me moving a ton of other items since my collection is so organized.
I am not sure I understand the question. I'm keeping it a pistol with a brace until my form 1 comes back. Won't be welding anything on to it (if you are talking about the barrel). I am ordering a swiss folding sig 551/M4 adopter so I can throw a buffer tub and brace on it.

From a collectors perspective, how big of a deal is the permanent flash suppressor? It appears these are 14.3" barrels, does that include the flash suppressor?

Once an F1 is processed, are there any significant changes needed or just add stock with hinge/pin?

Considering what LE/Preban 551s are going for, these are a real bargain. 200 bucks or so for a stock, 10 bucks for a hinge pin, 200 for the tax stamp and you have a brand new 551 SBR for several grand less than an old 551. Ping me with questions, and I should have mine by the end of the week.

Where are you getting a stock for $200? JDI has them listed for $250-325. Thanks.

It shouldn't have a permanent flash hider. My 553 didn't. It doesn't have to meet a 16" minimum barrel length since it is imported as a pistol. The stock install is simple - remove the backplate and install the stock assembly.

My "200 bucks for a stock" was an estimate based on what I have paid in the past. Didn't mean to assert that they are available for that at this point. What I don't get is why the telescoping stock (like I have on my 553) is cheaper than the standard fixed stock. I really like the telescoping one, but not sure if I can run a LPV with it on a 551, given the height of the diopters. I may need to run the conventional fixed stock and a cheek piece. Fortunately I have both, and can figure it out while I wait for the form 1.

    Hey There,
From my understanding (fairly high degree of confidence) the OAL of the barrel is 14.3 including the integral flash suppressor. That should give you about 12.5 inches of rifling. My AR SBR has a Centurion 12.5 inch barrel and its a super accurate system. Hopefully this will be too. In a perfect world, I would have preferred a removable flash suppressor so that suppressing it would be easier, but I will take what I can get. The integral flash suppressor on my 550 is pretty cool though... so I can live with it.
From a collectors perspective, I think its a push. One the one hand, the integral flash suppressor is the "correct" traditional approach, and some folks will want that - the same way some folks want the tulip flash suppressor on an AUG even though there are better ones out there. For folks that are going to use these guns and run them hard (like me), I think the bulk of us would have preferred a removable flash suppressor so we could run existing cans.

In terms of SBRs, that is more complicated. The install of the stock, pin and washer, that is easy. Its a ten minute job. Compliance with 922R is more complex and I am going to stay in my lane by not offering advice on that. There were some posts on that earlier in the thread.

Either way, this is a rare (and perhaps one in a life time) opportunity to get a swiss 551 without spending over/near 10 grand.

I stand corrected. I didn't know that the flash hider was integral.

Barfly: Do us all a favor: Can you chrono your 308 when you get it in? In a perfect world, I would get one of those too, but between the cost of mags and the gun, and 308, I decided to get the 551. Having said that, if the velocity of the 308 is still up there (especially with the 130 grain round) I might have to start selling stuff...

    Thanks,

    Damien

Gemtech HALO works perfectly on my 551.
