Looks like the Tikka T3X Lite or T3X CTR is where I am going to go with the rifle side of things. I am pretty sold on .308 for the simple fact that this is a training rifle, pure and simple. The likelihood of an issue rifle being .308 far outstrips the 6.5CM.

For optics, I am thinking that a Leupold 3-15 will be enough glass to start out with, and can be had for around $1000. I am having a hard time justifying spending significantly more than that.

Between the rifle and optic (plus mount, suggestions?), it looks like this is going to be around $2500 all-in.

I would take a hard look at Bushnell DMR/LRTSi line for optics. Feature packed with a good reticle. When looking at optics it seemed like they all had issues. So something less than perfect is easier to deal with at 1K vs 4K and I would be more likely to use it as intended. Used optics prices are way high IMO. Shop around and you will get close to used prices for new. My preference is for ARC mounts/rings.

Hard to say anything negative about the Tikkas, good choice.

If you hand load, the .308 is nothing to shake a stick at. ABM and Federal sell ammo loaded with 185 juggs if you dont.

Nice price. I am not normally a man that could give two shits about aesthetics... but there's aesthetics and then there's mossy oak breakup.

Well, I ended up snagging a pre-order on a Tikka T3X Lite Stainless Steel in 6.5 Creedmoor. Nabbed a picatiny base, and some Seekins rings. I'll be sticking a NightForce ATACR 4-16 F1 with a Mil-R reticle on top. Should end up being a sick shooter. Obviously gonna post up some slutty gunporn pics when it's put together.

That will be a very nice general-purpose rifle! Great scope too, and not too big/bulky for a sporter-weight rifle.

    Looking forward to the porn.

I gotta take a moment and chuckle. You entered into this adventure thinking your budget was 1K. I didn't even comment, because at $1K you ain't even getting in the game. I mean this lighthearted, and I'm in no way dogging you out. It's just not possible to get anything "serious" for $1K gun and glass. Can it be done? I guess, but again, I said not seriously. The bottom end scope I would even consider would be a NF SHV 4-14, and it's $1200. That's a base model ENTRY level.

Anyway, you listened, took some advise, shopped around, and put together a nice sounding stick. Congratulations man. I have spent some time around the Tikkas, the guys I know that have them love em. Same for your glass. That's a nice scope for a first rifle. It'll damn sure get you started.

Please follow up, and let us know how it all goes. Oh, congratulations, and welcome to the addiction.

    A $1K rifle taught me I want a $6K rifle.

Oh yes !!! Very true. Also, a $1500 scope will make you lust after a $3000 scope. And so it goes.
I will say that you made some great choices in your build. You did great for what you are looking to do, and where you're at. Shoot the heck out of this stick. Learn what you can, and upgrade as you decide you want to. With your equipment list, you can likely sell things as you upgrade for very little loss.

Take it from one who knows, there is NO BOTTOM to this precision rifle hole. It sure is amazing though.
