    Bulk/stockpile ammo purchase... 55 vs 62 grain - UPDATED

I am looking to make a bulk/stockpile purchase and was all set to buy the usual 55 grain fodder and ran across some Magtech 62 grain M193. It's basically a lead core non-piercing 62 grain projectile.

My rifles are good with either 55 or 62 and the price is pretty much identical. That said, What would you stockpile?

    ETA:
    1. The ammo will pretty be much for range use and classes.
    2. I didn't mean to open up a discussion between penetrating/non-penetrating.
    3. I didn't mean to open up a discussion between brass and steel or the differences between brands.
    4. The ammo I am looking at is all Magtech:
    55 grain: https://www.targetsportsusa.com/magt...l-p-76208.aspx
    62 grain: https://www.targetsportsusa.com/magt...b-p-77047.aspx
If you read the remarks on the 62 grain you will see that it is lead core M193.
    5. The price difference is minimal and I don't need the cans, so price isn't an issue.

So, same question... Would you buy the 55 or 62 grain?

I stock .223 Wolf Gold because its pretty good for all my needs and I still have cans of XM193 and PPU M193 but I have been stocking mostly Wolf Gold since it came out. I think I am sitting at 20K at least 20K of wolf gold right now.

I like the Magtech and think you would not have an issue, with either.

Should be fine, however M193 uses 55gr bullets

What are you stockpiling for? M193 has good record for terminal effects up close 62 grain is an unknown.

If you're trying to decide between suggestions like Magtech, the XM variants, Wolf, PPU, etc it isn't going to matter.

Buy as much as you can afford of the best quality ammunition you can afford.

According to who? I thought the best thing 193 does is ice pick.

Pretty much. Buying ammo in bulk based on terminal effect is a losing proposition. It guarantees you end up mediocre ammo at middle of the road prices.

I am a fan of heavier bullets so 62gr for me, between those two options. But if I was really doing it, I'd probably just go to Wolf Gold because that's usually a little cheaper which will make a difference after a few cases.

I bought a case of that 62 gr stuff when it was first available a few years ago. It's good stuff but if you're stocking up on range ammo, I'd just buy the Wolf, you won't notice a difference for your typical range use.

Gabe Suarez for one, but only up close, over 2700 fps or 150 yards for a 20" and 75 yards for a 14-16" M193 flips over, breaks at cannelure, base shatters into many pieces. At 2500-2700 fps or 150-200 yards for a 20" and 75-150 yards for a 14-16" M193 flips over, bends or breaks at cannelure, but with no fragmentation. Below 2500 fps it does not flip over or bend at cannelure; similar to the .22 WMR cartridge.

I suspect the 62 grain Magtech will perform in a similar manner but will reach 2500 fps at closer range. As to why worry about terminal performance with bulk ammo I always have in the back of my mind that today's blasting ammo may be tomorrows self defense load, you just never know. YMMV.
