"When the people fear their government there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." – Thomas Jefferson
That turned out really nice. Nice build.
That is fine, as long as you open-up the gas port. For Mk18 barrels, you have a few options:
1) new DD barrel, which does the job;
2) cut-down Colt 16" 6920 barrel with open gas port (you lose the Colt marking, and have to find someone to do the work and pay for the work and you wait and wait)
3) Colt made and marked 10.3" barrel (a little pricey, and you will have to wait as they are back-ordered)
4) Colt make and marked 10.3" barrel in SOCOM profile (also pricey, but available sooner)
5) go with a different size. LMT also made a version of the Mk18, one of the earlier versions, and used 10.5." 11.5" is ever a better shooting barrel, but you lose bragging rights to really call it a Mk18.
Fun stuff. I am working on few projects like this, and the SBRs are always fun. I like the CQC carbines and M4's and the more long-range SPR / CSASS, SASS rifles. The mid-range barreled rifles like standard AR15, are not as interesting... At least to me.
#2 is clearly good if you already have a Colt barrel sitting around, but if you have to buy the barrel, and then get the work done, that doesn't make much sense, either in time or money. You can also buy a new cut-down Colt as well. Missed that one.
One other thought... I am (admittedly) a barrel and a scope snob. I make some military clones for friends. I was talking with a SWAT Police leader and he told me their department had used some other barrels in the past (not Colt and not DD), a big brand name that you would all know, and he said that their testing, suppressed and unsuppressed was that Colt was just more accurate, and they were swapping out barrels in their SBR type rifles for Colt. I found that interesting, as accuracy is not something I have seen measured in 10.3" to 11.5" barrels, and not something that I would think would a) be very good in the first place, and b) differ that much between reputable brands. He did have high marks for DD, but wanted Colt.
It'd be interesting if we could come up with a cookbook on the "official recipes" for these little guys--really nice would be if we could get Combat Diver's help if he's still around since IIRC he built (builds?) 'em in-theater.
Nice build, jpmuscle! Tagging to subscribe... though I cheat by building mine as pistols rather than SBR's and without suppressors, I have at least one more to build after the one I'm working on right now, and possibly two after that depending on legal-political and girlfriend matters. (A milspec Mk 18--possibly just buy a complete DD URG and have it refinished--for me, plus if we can get the girlfriend around ITAR and if I can find another CASV-EL handguard a right-handed version of my "Gremlin" PDW and a copy of the C8 CQB, which is the Canadian version of these, for her to use under my supervision when down here.)
