A with some Guillermo del Toro movie, The Shape Of Water is difficult to easily categorize. Think film noir meets science fiction meets romance meets social commentary meets cold war drama. Like del Toro movies or not, he has to get credit for taking chances and originality, something sorely lacking in risk averse Hollywood. That this movie won Best Picture - as well as Best Director and others - bodes well for others taking more chances. If I had any criticisms, it was that del Toro attempts to jam too much into this movie, with examinations of homophobia, racism, loneliness, and aging, to name a few! End of the day, it's a beautifully made, beautifully acted, original movie that's as much art as movie. A-
