    M1 Garand hunting ammo

My Son is getting a CMP Garand and he wants to hunt with it. From what I have read it seems that standard hunting ammo may be too hot for the Garand. If this is true what would y'all recommend. A hunting load for whitetail?

Is he getting of of the .30-06 models, or one that has been altered for .308?

And good for him, preserving a bit of our history. I have a real itch to snag a Garand, M1 Carbine and a 19111 when they all become available next year.

The primary concern with normal commercial ammo is that it will overdrive the gas system and bend the op rod.

American eagle makes/made some loads that are garand(30-06) and m1a(308) safe. They had a picture of those respective rifles on the box

The other option is the buy a new gas plug that lowers the pressure of the gas system. Here is one such example:

I don't shoot garands so all this info is second hand but should give you a place to start.

He is getting the 30-06 model.

Ski - that is what I read about as far as the Op Rod is concerned. Thanks for the link. That gas plug may do the trick and allow Him t shoot whatever hunting ammo he wants

The biggest concern with shooting commercial ammunition in the M1 Garand is damaging the op rod. The Garand Gear gas plug addresses this concern by increasing the swept volume of the gas cylinder. The gas plug can be purchased here: http://www.garandgear.com/ported-gas-plug.html I've fired a considerable quantity of commercial ammunition, including Winchester 150g JSP (2920 fps), without any undue wear on the op rod.

If the op rod will pass the tilt test, this gas plug will make it safe to shoot commercial hunting ammunition.

Looks like the gas plug will be a definite purchase.

Id add a fresh Wolff recoil spring too.

I just checked out the recoil spring. For $26 it may be best to get the whole Wolff Service pack and replace all of the springs.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but wouldn't military 30 cal ball ammo be fine for hunting?

I think I know what you are thinking. If it will kill people isn't it good enough for deer? Yes it would work but there is a lot better ammunition out there for hunting purposes. Why not take advantage of a round that will fully expand and create more damage? Think of it along the lines of 9mm FMJ vs Fed 9mm HST ammo. You'd take the Fed HST any day
