    Review: Ghost In The Shell

A highly anticipated movie based on the classic Japanese anime movie. I was stoked they planned to make it a movie with latest CGI, but disappointed in the casting of Scarlett Johansson in the lead, and that only got worse when seeing it. I get that having a big name in the lead sells tickets, but at no time watching this movie are you not always aware you're watching Scarlett Johansson with black hair play the Major vs ever seeing past it to get into this movie.

All the pieces are there for a classic sci fi movie, and they did a commendable job of sticking to the original movie, but it just never comes together to be the movie it could have been. See the trailer and you pretty much seen this movie and the original anime movie still better. I think a no name actress who looked a bit more like the anime character, leaner and athletic, vs the more curvy and very caucasian Johansson would have been a winner. I like Johansson and found she was good for her last sci fi role in Lucy, but this was not her movie. The supporting cast is solid but Johansson is preverbial you know what in the punch bowl of this movie. B-/C+

Saw it. Only reason I watched it all the way through was because it was free. Despite seeing it only about a month or two ago I really don't remember what it's about.

I agree. I've been a GITS fan for years - saw the first movie in the mid 90's when it came out. I have the first two animated series and all the movies on DVD. I like Scarlett in some of her roles, but she just didn't fit the Major's character for me. A younger Milla Jojovich would have been good for the role, had it happened 10 years ago, as she has a more angular face.

Trust me, tirades or not it's not worth paying for. Maybe if you're bored one cold/snowy/rained out Sunday and want to see it....... but there's nothing about that movie worth spending money on

This movie was an insult to everybody in the world.

I watched every ep of 2nd Gig on Sci Fi in the day. It was awesome.

People dont realize the religious connotations of GITS and Robocop.

GITS follows the path of Buddhism. Of self conquest. Of making your own heaven, hell, or inbetween. Violence irrespective to the concept that we humans are foolish beings even in our wisdom. We are not beneath contempt nor forgiveness. The greatest evils are what we create for ourselves. The Major is a virtually mysterious character in both senses of the word. Reborn and reborn again. She attempts to imbue the 9 virtues of the Buddha:

    1. Awakened (She knows she has risen froman unknown slumber and is aware
2.*Perfectly self-awakened (She realizes she may not be who she thought or thinks she was or is, but this is no setback. Each day is new)
    3. Endowed with higher knowledge and ideal conduct. (She is calculating and stoic. Neither deceiver nor trickster. She retains abilities she may have had in untold past lives
    4. Well-gone or Well-spoken. (She does not speak idly and when she does it is with open ended introspection.
    5. Wise in the knowledge of the many worlds. (She is aware of the many levels of crime and conversion. How some things are connected and other things coincidence. She also makes home made porn on the side in the comics)
    6. Unexcelled trainer of untrained people. (She earns her rank each day teaching tactics, weapons, procedure, or even offering to teach a boy how to make love in one of the animes)
    7. Teacher of*gods and humans.(Again be it debriefing Section 9 or offering to punch some teenyboppers V card)
    8. The Blessed one (She is certainly unique in her architecture but without vanity)
    9. Worthy of homage. (Despite beibg in a 20 year old looking body, she is the Major.

These are heady concepts peculiar to a populist concept ofthe Buddha that most Americans will not follow except for "huh huh she got nekkid." or "whoa she shot that robot" totally missing the point that she defeats her overall enemy by making peace with it. A Buddhist concept. To end her cycle of death and rebirth.
The cyberpunk was incidental to the Thesis.

    In contrast....

Robocop is very much about the American Jesus. Crucified in gunfire, his female partner a Mary Magdalene, his black Desk Sergeant his Peter. Arising 3 days after death he performs miraculous feats met with skepticism and wonder. The SWAT commander his Pontias Pilate, Clarence Boddicker and his gang as Pharisees. Dick Jones his Herod. The Yuppie guy his Judas Iscariot. But he is the American Jesus. The old factory that once made cars had been turned into a den of thieves, a drug lab. His no knock and slaughter was akin to Jesus breaking things at the Temple shouting "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY FATHER'S HOUSE?!" only this time he says it with bullets. He then kills his killers with a 9mm Machine Pistol and is redeemed at the end by reclaiming his name and causing Herod to fall from his own tower. I dont care about the other movies .

I say that to say that they tried to make The Major from Buddha to Jesus and failed miserably.

Anime should stick to being anime. I hope everyone involved in these films ends up living in a van by the river.

I hate when "remakes" are completly changed via creative licensing/interpretation.

Heres a concept do what harry potter and the lord of the rings did, multiple movies. The true fan is happy to see it right even if it means multiple sessions. Stop catering to the halfwits with the attention span of a newt.

Unlike LOR, I don't think this movie required a series to do it justice. That was not the problem. Problem was the usual problem, poor movie making that missed the mark. In the hands of a good director who really "got it" this one could have been a sci fi classic.

I was generalizing, saying dont water it down. Stop catering to the people that know nothing of the show. 3/4 of the movies now are back story.

    It gets old
