    First AR

So I'm very close to purchasing my first AR. I've chosen the BCM RECCE-16 KMR-A Carbine. I'm thinking that I'll start with the Magpul MBUS Gen 2 front and rear backup sights while I settle on an optic. I'm leaning toward a variable optic but I'm not sure. Maybe a red dot combo. Both are really expensive. I purchase most of my 9mm ammo through SGAmmo.com. Can anyone recommend a good range and HD ammo that I may be able to purchase from this site? If you have any optic advice I'd appreciate that as well. I don't want to spend more than about $700 for an optic. The AR is primarily for HD and hopefully won't need to target anything outside of 150-200 yards. Thanks in advance.

I'll leave the optic talk to those who know better. As far as ammo, I had the same question some months ago.

I've had red dots, Acogs and now a 1-6 variable optic. I'm a fan of the Acogs for a simple, tough shtf optic, that being said I have a Kahles 1-6 now and it is awesome! I probably won't go back to a fixed power optic, the 1-6 gives me the ability to run it as a red dot up close and with the magnification of the optic I can run it for precision work as well.

For HD I would pick up a 1.5 Acog. It's always on with the tritium and the fiber optic. No need to replace batteries or punch buttons to power on the optic. Looking in the EE section of this site or others to find good deals on lightly used optics.

My bad. Need to work on my reading comprehension as I missed the HD part of the question.

I thought he was asking for range ammo.

If you're going to get an Aimpoint PRO, get one used as they're pretty cheap and rarely ever used much. About 1/2 your budget. GREAT optic, too big and heavy for it's purpose IMO.

For well under $700 you can get an Aimpoint Micro H1 or H2 on a good mount used or new for a bit more.

I'd go the new Micro route personally.

For a defensive load, I like this one (64gr Gold Dot soft point) as it's a proven load and the price is good. Not that you need 200 rounds, but shipping is free at 10 boxes.

I love SG Ammo, got a shipment 2 weeks ago. PSA is good as well. I use the Wolf GOLD from SGA for non-frangible practice ammo with no issues-better than AE by a mile.

    Shouldn't I go with a 5.56 round over a .223 round?

So I'm going with the Magtech 5.56mm Ball M193 for range ammo. Let me know if anyone has a suggestion for 5.56 HD round. Thanks again for all the help!
