I can answer both of your questions with one word, a Grunt!

I guarantee some Infantry Specialists were sitting around trying to avoid being put on detail and said "you know what would look cool on our rifles!", and from there it took off. Now every Private in the Infantry looking at all the tacticool parts they need before deployment are buying these up to stick on each others weapons while everyone is sleeping.

I can even speak of some of the jack ass ery things I've seen and heard while being a grunt. But I could name about 50 different turds that served under me that could have very well could have came up with this idea.

My wife didn't seem to want one for her rifle, which is good because I wouldn't touch it to install it.

I recently purchased a Stag A-3 complete left handed upper(minus BCG & CH)with an American flag pattern on both sides of the DC. It is appears as some type of etching and for lack of the proper term appears like a B&W photo etching. I like the flag DC well enough & all but that it is not why I bought the upper.

As someone who engraves them, I like them..lol. Seriously, it is just up the the person. If someone wants to paint their rifle pink and put happy little unicorn stickers on it, hey, more power to them. Customization is just that. Whatever the owner wants is all that matters.
