    Govt. size 9mm?

So, after 17 years of carrying Glocks I've rediscovered 1911's, which was my preferred carry gun till I was told what to carry. Anyway, I bought a Springfield EMP4 and I love it. It's fun, accurate, small, lightweight, and reliable so far. Back in the day my tastes ran toward Colt 1911's moderately modified. After playing with the EMP I want another full size 1911, but still in 9mm. What are the best going without going full custom? I'm a lefty so an ambi safety is a must. I've looked at Springers, Colts, Kimbers, and Dan Wesson. I'm leaning towards a higher end model but would prefer to stay around 1500-1700. If I went Colt I'd have to add the safety. Rails are Ok as it would be a range gun and possibly used with a light as a HD but certainly not a must. What are my best options? I'm in AR. but am not really interested in Wilson or Nighthawk as they're too high and I've been there already. Years ago I had several full customs and other than pride of ownership I wasnt convinced they were worth the $$.

Dan Wesson is the upper end of factory. Beyond that you're into semi-custom territory. I put an STI ambi on mine and I'm quite satisfied with it.

I've spent a lot of time on 9mm 1911s over the past decade. Primarily used for Steel Challenge and high round count classes. My STI has gone about 20K rounds with the same Tripp Mags I originally purchased. I've added a Colt 9mm series 80 since as a backup gun and it is early, but seems solid.
I know that Gunsite is bringing out a 1911 9mm with Colt. Have a few a of their Gunsite 1911s and all are keepers and definitely in the right price range. They have been quality guns at a fair price. Have not seen any pictures but being it is still Jeff Cooper worlds don't expect ambi safety's.

Or look at a .38 Super and a 9mm conversion barrel--if memory serves, and I'm admittedly a little rusty, the 9mm and Super use the same ejector, which along with firing pin and FP stop are the major difference from the .45/10mm version.

Don't know what the retail prices are, but it's another option. Or for Quick, Cheap and Dirty some of Rock Island's new .22TCM's (think 5.56 NATO case cut and necked to .38 Super length) come with a 9mm barrel too.

Clearly well at the low end of your budget, like off the scale, but I had a Armscor RIA tactical (TAC) ultra model in 9mm and it was flawless.

Extended beavertail grip safety, ambi safety (I'm a lefty too), adjustable Novak-like rear sight, fiber optic front, extended slide release, VERY aggressive in hand VS/VZ (I forget which!) stippled grips, lightened and skeletonized combat hammer & trigger. Fit & finish very good for the price and shootable right out of the box. Trigger pull was good enough out of the box not to fool with it. Never once had a failure to feed or fire.

Personally I choose my CZ-75B over the 1911 platform, but that's just me. 20+ years w/ the CZ is a habit too tough to break ...

That could be an option to get you shooting until you really find or determine exactly what you want.

Given that 10-shots are a group and 5-shots may be a favorable trend ... know that just one good 3-shot group can make you an instant internet superstar!

I'm dying to try a 9mm 1911. My only experience in IDPA was with a Glock 34 but I made the switch to a CZ-75 Shadow Target II. The recoil and muzzle rise is significantly less and it really improved my times. With that being said I want to try a 9mm 1911 and see how it compared

If you’re still LE or MIL, CZ has an excellent discount program which includes Dan Wesson 1911s.

Yes they do! Unfortunately it doesn't apply to the SP-01 or its variants

I bought a Springfield "Lipsey Edition". Its right in your price / quality range. It does not have the amby safety though. So that might kill the deal. I really like mine, or maybe they make some out there with amby??
