I have a TLR-1 mounted on a Remington 870 and it has had a steady diet of slugs and buckshot fired through it. I have had zero issues.

I mounted mine at 12 o'clock. No shadows and easy thumb activation.
The TLR-1 HL works fine mounted at 12:00 for me.

spend a bit more on the HL version
The TLR1 is great for a small house. Larger homes and anything bigger than small could use the lumens.
I recently tested my TLR1 (I have 3) against my friend's HL again and his is significantly brighter than last time. We assume it was due to low battery.
I'd go TLR1 HL for sure. No reason to own the TLR1 anymore. And I hate strobes.
I've been running a M3 light on my M4 carbine for 15 years and I stick with it because it works. If I were looking for a new light for the carbine, the TLR-1 I have mounted on my Rem. 870 would be a good choice.
Don't get caught up in what the other guy is using. Buy the best you can afford and focus on mastering the equipment you selected.

Plus one on the tlr1
I also run a tlr4 on an ar pistol

I have run several TLR 1s on rifles without any problems. They work fine in that application.
Notes:
1. I usually run them at 1:30 or 3:00 and activate the toggle with my middle finger. I am not alone in that. If you can run it at 12:00, then you will be in good company as well.
2. You should remove them when casing the rifles for range (or other) trips. The toggle switch can get activated in the case. Surefire has the same problem, IIRC.
