Reducing the mass of components such as receivers, carriers, and buffers is for gamers.
Those of us that treat our guns like work guns stay a little closer to fighting weight, with perhaps a shorter or non-203 profile barrel.

I really like picking everyone's brain. A lot more experience just in this thread than I can ever have.
I prefer an "original" weight carbine. It's just an original (6720 or similar) profile barrel, no ultra LW parts. Lighter weight smooth vs quad rail if it has a freefloat.
I have an A1 carbine that's light and handy but it has a regular profile barrel. My 6920 has a KAC M4 rail and a surefire light, it doesn't bother me carrying all night. I had a lightweight upper once, like a 6720 profile although not Colt, groups opened up after moderate fire. No thanks,
