    Smith and Wesson Model 49

I picked this little guy up back around 1990 or 91. When my Dad passed away in 1993 I gave it to my Mom to keep as a home defense gun. She used it with the second set of factory oversized grips in the additional pic.
She had it from '93 to when she passed away in 2014. Now it's back full circle.

This was a pawn shop used gun purchase. IMG_2732.jpgIMG_2733.jpg

The 49 has always been a favorite j frame for me. The all steel frame is nice for extended range sessions. I think you can argue that the semi exposed hammer serves no real purpose in a defensive gun but I still like having the option to thumb cock. Sorry about losing your folks. That 49 is sure to be a treasured piece now.

Appreciate it man. Also that hammer does offer me some peace of mind should I ever have to take a shot while from a forced fixed position of some distance. It's also great when shooting against your buddies on steel back at the 25 or more. They have 442 series guns.

    I have to admit I would like a 442.

The humpback bodyguards are my favorite J-frames. I have one of the newer 357 mag versions, but I wouldn't mind scoring an aluminum 638. Thank you for sharing your history with the gun, and sorry to hear about your loses.

I love the 49 and 638. Great little guns, and they are surprisingly easy to draw from a pocket.

The 442 is a neat little J-frame as well. It's good they are making them without the stupid lock.

When I pick up a newer one I'm definitely going no lock.

I think G&R Tactical keeps those in stock. That's where I got my last no-lock 642. Grant sells a bunch of them.
