Most people in the south didn't have slaves; most didn't know anyone who had slaves. But yes, the slaves were instrumental to the success of the south's economy. At the end of the day the south wanted to keep their economy running, and determine for themselves how to do it, with or without slaves.
It is true that Lincoln was largely ambivalent about slavery; he recognized it as a moral abomination, but was generally 'meh.' But he also knew the rest of the country would be screwed without the south's economy.
Well, that was The Most Important Election Ever (trademarking the phrase). Until the next one. The media are using EVERY election as a benchmark, as an indictment against Trump and Co. When few of them really are.
Good news is seat is open in 2020, not 2024.
Like the Witch From Delaware, just because you are very far to the right, does not mean you are better than a regular conservative.

YES !!!
The media learned many lessons after the 2016 Presidential elections and we just saw how they modified their message .
They will drumbeat the sexual accusations forever and there is a certain percentage of the populace that is unable to function
beyond their emotions.
Which would be weird except that it isn't. Luther Strange was backed by Mitch McConnell and company and far outspent anyone else.
Go back to the special election primary and see how this thing evolved. Roy Moore only got 164k out of 423k votes with Strange in second at 139k and Mo Brooks, the grass roots conservative, in third at 83k. These were the three main players in a really ugly election.
In the primary runoff, Moore got 55% of the vote and Strange got 45%.
The problem with Strange was he was tainted after being appointed by Alabama governor Bentley who would be ousted because of a sexual scandal. Strange's second problem was he had the backing of establishment Republicans. So he lost Trump's base.
Mo Brooks' problem was before the Republican presidential primary, he publicly questioned the honesty and integrity of Clinton and Trump though he eventually supported Trump. On every radio and TV ad, Luther Strange's campaign relentlessly played a recording of Brooks' comments.
So Brooks lost Trump's base.
The 20k write-in votes from mostly Republican voters for a different candidate gave Doug Jones the election.

Do you even get down innagrass, bro?
I've been saying that for years. Well, except for the "pretty much" part.
He's now yesterday's news and it will never be investigated. You only investigate winners.
Except your side will now completely ignore their own allegations, just because he lost. All they really cared bout was the victory too and you know it. Yeah, that's your moral high ground, rapidly sinking beneath your feet.
LBJ and Huey Long are spinning in their graves, with delight.
What if this whole crusade's a charade?
And behind it all there's a price to be paid
For the blood which we dine
Justified in the name of the holy and the divine…
