I'm glad we're all on the same page. GD is where I spend 90% of my time on M4C; technical discussions can only be carried so far before they become redundant. I fear that if GD were shut down the forum would take a huge impact in site traffic.

I agree. On the one hand we are cautioned not to start new threads if there is already a pre-existing thread on the subject, yet at the same time if a thread several years old is resurrected then the "necropost" comments start flying. Can't have it both ways. Also, sometimes the search function doesn't turn up results that pop right up in Google with links to M4Carbine.net . Bottom line: Maybe it's just me but sometimes I hear crickets chirping in the technical forums. Could just be that once a subject is covered, it's covered, but after a while that seems to defeat the purpose of a "discussion" forum, IMHO. Of course, there don't need to be a dozen threads about "what lube are you using" or "AK vs AR". Still, if the last time a subject was brought up was five years ago, then maybe a new thread is okay?
And what happened to a lot of longtime members that were here when I joined in 2010 but haven't posted in a long time? What happened?
I can name more than one forum where a new thread is started and the first half-dozen replies are sarcastic nonsense or belittling the OP. Glad that doesn't happen here (or at least only happens at a minimum).
Well, I'll first just say if I have ruffled anyone's feathers I do apologize. I have never had said to me, or read, anything on this forum where I would think, ok, I just never want to meet that person in public.
I guess I'm the odd one out but if an argument ensues for whatever reason I find it very difficult to understand why a person involved actually would leave the forum over it. I just think to myself, wow, they took that exchange that seriously? ... and I have done that. So yeah, people react stupidly on the Internet.
Granted acting in a civil manner is the best way to go though. A reflective time out such as this thread is occasionally necessary as well. I'm guilty of needing to read AC's ROE more than once.
Yes, that's when a forum becomes a Wikiless Wiki or a Library with no content catalog. A lot of forums search feature is only useful to the old time members. If a new person searches for a normal term they get little to no results. At the same time an old member will recall that in a 5 year old thread about extractors someone mentioned Grolsch beer. So they search for Grolsch and boom, there it is, the definitive extractor thread.
Internet forums are like old age. You know you had something, but you can't remember where it went.
There is a lot of good conversation on the GD. There's going to be a little heat because the GD is where we discuss politics, current events, major news, dreams, gun dreams, rated x dreams, nightmares, and we each have our own opinion and we tend to ostracize certain members for thinking a little differently.
There are a lot of people on this forum that I actually enjoy - I would like to take a minute to address each one of these fine men:
SteyrAUG
WillBrink
ABNAK
Averageman
chuckman
Doc Glockster
Straight Shooter
Firefly
NYH1
26 INF
tb-av
Diamondback

This forum wouldn't be the same without you- Elephant!
I hardly bother going to the other sub forums anymore. Unless I want some 2000 post count couch commando giving mediocre advice on every subject he knows nothing about, or a SME/ Industry Professional insulting other members lack of "terminology" and "nomenclature" all because he has a small dick!
Other than that, its all in good fun. I mean, shit gets said in one post but then another post come us and there's not any bitterness or hatred. People disagree with me but I don't hold that against them. We agree on something's, and disagree on others. But we are all great at trying to get our point across!

It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.
Chuck, we miss ya man.

I would hate to lose GD. Lots of vigorous and dynamic discussion indeed including some over the top posts/individuals at times. The post by Safetyhit this week is a good example of when our community comes together and truly shines.

When I was new here I stayed away from GD because of the nastieness and I was devouring info in the others areas especially the NFA stuff. Now I’m in GD more because it’s one of the ways I keep informed. When I see or hear of a major event I turn to the GD forum to see what like minded folks have to say.

Ditto this x a bazillion. I have seen more videos of real deal things happening on the streets of America than I ever saw on the news - even conservative news.
I’ll take it a step further. There are guys here whose opinions or “read” on current events carry far, far,FAR more weight than the so-called experts on Fox News, or any broadcast news for that matter. Some of them have been mentioned, many have not.
They are more “read on” to current events and they are just plain ol’ have more smarts than the suits. Their intel is solid and reliable.

I'm in agreement with pretty much everything said so far.
The thing that is most disconcerting about forum decorum is the dog-piling. Once one of the cool kids makes a derogatory remark, it seems that a lot of hanger's on take that as the OK to pile on. I try not to do that, if I have and you were the victim, I apologize.
My general strategy is to start at the top with AR General, and then go down the page, hitting Technical, Pistol, Shotgun, Training and Tactics, Tactical Gear, then General Discussion. I generally only visit the other sections when I have a specific need.
As someone mentioned, after a while pretty much everything has been addressed some time or another. A lot of times I find myself following threads in the technical areas out of morbid curiosity. I mean, really, WTF, five pages on proper castle nut staking? Not to mention the untold number of pages devoted to carrier/gas key staking.
General discussion in some cases is a life saver to an otherwise unfullfilling visit.
