Never read Horse Soldiers but IIRC Masters of Chaos by Linda Robinson went into the first several ODA's in Afghanistan. The book detailed an SF Soldier who bulged discs riding a horse, so I see this film/book may be an overlap to several different ODA's, two are mentioned in the film.
As for the first Americans on the ground, read up on former SF and CIA Billy Waugh, he was 72 when he deployed to Afghanistan to hunt OBL whom he personally trained back in the day. He penned a book after he finally retired.
