    Ruger Mini 14 (300 or 5.56)

    Hey all,
    I’m really interested in getting a mini 14 and I like both Rugers in the tactical 5.56/.223 with Ati stock as well as their tactical blackout 300 version. I’m just torn which to get and theyre both the same price $750 online. I do have two ARs that are 5.56 and I do realize 7.62x39 is a more expensive round so I’m trying to decide the better option. I do prefer the ATi stock more but the 300 version can be converted to that anyway right? What do you guys prefer?

    The Russian 7.62x39 is pretty cheap to shoot. Blackout is coming down though. I'm not a fan of the ATI stocks at all. Whichever you go with they are solid guns. Yes the stocks can be swapped.

    Really? Where I am (northeast) -39mm is up to 4 to 6-cents a round cheaper, in bulk. Not sure how the mini shoots it, but in my -39mm AR, it significantly improves the inherent accuracy of the round, as in groups 1/2 that if same brand was shot in another -39mm llatform.
    Given that 10-shots are a group and 5-shots may be a favorable trend ... know that just one good 3-shot group can make you an instant internet superstar!

    It’s been a while since I bought 7.62. Currently don’t own any guns that shoot that’s why I’d consider the 300 blackout version. Basically same price so I’d get it shipped to an FFL here in NY.

    7.62x39 and 300 BO are not the same round. The former is significantly cheaper, for one.

    300blk = 7.62x35
    7.62x39 is a russian cartridge used in AKs and SKS typically.

    So even in terms of accuracy I guess 5.56 takes the cake ?

    While they have changed the barrels on Mini 30's as far as I know, I will never forget an early article on them in Shooting Times where they were portrayed as the cream of the crop and I always assumed that angle was forced on the author. He also listed groupings from a Chinese SKS ($79 at the time versus $400+) and with the exception of a single handload, every cartridge shot in the 2 rifles had larger groups out of the Mini 30, often significantly so.
