I was convinced of the same thing, and I did eventually build a solid "M4gery" for about what the OEM costs bare. But, (#1) - I will never get the money I have in it back if I sold it and (#2) I could have been out shooting a 6920 for the 8 - 12 months or so it took to get mine right.

I know we are probably coming on pretty strong, but I will never build a configuration I can buy again. Looking back, it just was not worth it.

P.S. My most rewarding build is a unique 20" rifle configuration that no one sells and that I assembled from quality parts.

I think he's hit the nail on the head here. If you want an M4 like you were issued, better to buy one. If you want to build a special or specific-purpose rifle, build it.

Depending on the brand, I respectfully disagree on the build vs. buy. I thought that at one time, but I have builds that were definitely cheaper than if I bought a new complete BCM rifle for example. I’m not talking about using cheesy brand names like PSA. Solid reputable parts. It may take longer, but it is definitely doable.

Now this next statement may get you - but if you are smart, you can even pick up used parts that save you a considerable amount. Would I buy every part used? No, probably not, and by now I have my “network” of M4Cers, actually they are my friends now, that I buy from. For example: LaRue Tactical rails? I have 5 and not one we’re brand new. LaRue scope mounts, Colt uppers, Colt BCG’s(although that’s one item I alway buy new - my LMT BCG’s). Vltor Emod, LMT SOPMOD stocks, some practically new, for much less than new.
My point is this- if you are patient and willing to be a little creative in your parts acquisition, you can put an excellent carbine together for less.

Not to drag him into this, but docsherm just said the other night that he hasn’t bought a complete new rifle since 2004. I can promise you it’s not because building is more expensive.
