Depending on the brand, I respectfully disagree on the build vs. buy. I thought that at one time, but I have builds that were definitely cheaper than if I bought a new complete BCM rifle for example. I’m not talking about using cheesy brand names like PSA. Solid reputable parts. It may take longer, but it is definitely doable.
Now this next statement may get you - but if you are smart, you can even pick up used parts that save you a considerable amount. Would I buy every part used? No, probably not, and by now I have my “network” of M4Cers, actually they are my friends now, that I buy from. For example: LaRue Tactical rails? I have 5 and not one we’re brand new. LaRue scope mounts, Colt uppers, Colt BCG’s(although that’s one item I alway buy new - my LMT BCG’s). Vltor Emod, LMT SOPMOD stocks, some practically new, for much less than new.
My point is this- if you are patient and willing to be a little creative in your parts acquisition, you can put an excellent carbine together for less.
Not to drag him into this, but docsherm just said the other night that he hasn’t bought a complete new rifle since 2004. I can promise you it’s not because building is more expensive.
