My take is that it really depends upon the footprint and use.
I have a small retail and now online shop, and we just started carrying Aimpoint. At SHOTSHOW, we looked hard at all the offerings, and settled on four models we are carrying:
Aimpoint Micro T2
Aimpoint Pro
Aimpoint Comp 5
Aimpoint Patrol
As we also have an active clientele for whom we build M4A1 clones, we are always buying ML2's and rebuilding, but many customers are opting for a Patrol. Looks the part and is a better product.

Yeah I had the same question. It's just a spare holder. It doesn't offer extendeded run time. I think I bought them on Ebay and Aimpoint actually sent me a new rubber strap to retain the covers.

The vast majority of users will be well served by a pro. I don't know of very many stateside applications where it wouldn't do the job, especially on the non-LE side of the house. Weight, size, and battery options are where the T1/T2/CompM5 really shine.
