New Guy Stupid Question about His BCM SBR Rifle

Well, I'm starting my membership here with a stupid question, my apologies in advance. I'm not sure I know enough even to ask the question properly, but here goes. I have a Bravo Company 11.5" SBR rifle, signed, sealed and delivered. It is however, compared to my Colt 6920, pretty darn heavy and I'm trying to figure out why. It has an "old school" Daniel Defense quad rail system. Could that be it? Or is it the barrel? Here are the specs on my rifle:

BCM Standard 11.5" Upper Receiver Group w/ Daniel Defense (DARK EARTH) RISII Mk18 Handguard

BCM no longer sells it so that's all the information I can get on it. It was a gift from my dad and it is all legal, etc.

I'm trying to drop weight on it. Would replacing the rail do the trick?

It's pretty safe to say that a bit of the weight is in the quad rail. The 6920 usually comes with plastic tube stock or magpul fore end, which are about as light as it gets for hand guards.

I don't know what barrel profile the upper has, but that could also be where some of the weight is coming from.

So short answer, yes, replacing the rail would drop some weight.

The rail prob weighs 15oz or so. Quadrails can be heavy and that would be the easiest place to cut weight. The ris is a high quality rail though. Changing out the barrel for a slimmer profile would also reduced eight

What optics are you running? The mount/optic choice can also added weight

I have a 10" DD Lite Rail on my old 6.8, and the name is hardly appropriate in this KeyMod/M-LOK age. A quick Google search indicates that your rail likely weighs 14.1 oz, which might not include the barrel nut and bolts. A BCM 10" KMR Alpha KeyMod system weighs 8.6 oz with the barrel nut and other hardware.

Replacing the rail will definitely eliminate some weight.

You can find 8"-9" rails such as SLR around 7-8 ounces.

Hands down the rail. Get a BCM rail Instead of the RIS, and it’ll feel completely different

My MK18 has a shorter barrel than my BCM 11.5 (KMR handguard), but is about a pound heavier.

    It’s all the rail.

Or just build another upper and keep the rail.

Assuming this is the rail, it is just shy of 1 lb. https://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Dani...8020%20fde.htm Add in the weight of the sights and whatever else and you are probably at 1 lb.

In all you are probably weighing in a good 10 oz. above the Colt 6920.
