Legal question: machinegun rental gun maintenance

As a side job, I work for a local machinegun rental range. I fix, repair, clean, maintain, and customize lawfully owned machineguns that belong to the range, to include pre-86, post 86 law letter guns, etc. I also occasionally supervise range activities and assist shooters.

    Legal question:
Can the owner of the FFL/range/business/guns allow the firearms to be transported off of the range for routine maintenance, repair, and cleaning by range personnel / employees? If so, do these firearms have to be returned at the end of the day, or can they be kept overnight for these purposes?

I understand that NFA items are a touchy legal area, and we want to check to ensure that all laws are complied with.

    Thanks

There are a variety of folks here well-qualified to answer OP's question, and it is a pretty simple one. OP can consider the source and filter the response as he deems necessary. We now return this thread to productive commentary and contributions.

    For the doubting Thomas'.

Ever been to SHOT? Even been to Range Day at SHOT? Knob Creek? How do you think those machine guns get there? Not everyone is a sole proprietor. C'mon, this is Captain Obvious stuff.

There is even such a thing as "off site storage" which only requires notification of NFA branch. No paperwork, no designated caretakers, nada.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

    Chuck, we miss ya man.
