My High School didn't have an Army JROTC program in the 1970's (did Senior ROTC in college). Same school added the program in the 1990's and my youngest son did 4 years of the program. He's the Freshman at West Point. I help out for various activities off campus, including rappelling.
Even though an Army sponsored program via Cadet Command (5th Brigade for New Mexico), it really focuses on citizenship, grades, community service and some military structure for leadership, promotions. They do a lot of programs like adopt-a-highway trash collection, providing color guards for sports events and helping out with Special Olympics. Select cadets get to spend a week at various Army bases for what is called JCLC. These High School battalions are pretty tight groups, sort of like extended brothers and sisters. It is surprising that a majority of cadets in the program never actually continue into enlisted or officer ranks in the military. However, if you spend three years in a JROTC program, it's an automatic bump in pay grade when enlisted.
No matter which branch program (Navy, Marines, Air Force, etc.), usually well disciplined and end up well as adults. Spending your time saying Sir or Ma'am in High School does not hurt.

To stop planes from being taken over. Especially 93 where they were already fighting for it. Sure it might have been a little Walter Mitty to think like that, but that's what I felt at the time. If ever there was a group of people I'd love the chance to rescue by tipping the odds just a little more in their favor, that would probably be it.
Of course I'd have loved to be there to shoot Lanza in the face the moment he stepped out of his house.
