There's nothing cheap about the X95. Having owned both, I'd buy another X95 before I'd buy another AUG.

But I don't think I would pick either of them over a good AR or a good AK.
When Steyr releases the RS556, I plan to buy one! Unfortunately, all reports indicate that we might have to wait until 2019.

My AUG has no accuracy problems other than a very heavy trigger, that can be managed and it doesn’t put gas in my face.

I had neither accuracy nor gassing issues with my X95.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    (10 shots, 100 yards)

The person I sold it to reported getting 1.5" groups at 100 yards with his pet hand load with 77-gr SMKs (with no adjustment for the rifle itself).

The fact that your user name is SteyrAUG and you don't know this- jeesh.
Honestly, back in 99 I chose the name simply to be different on a forum called HK91.com. And like I said, I haven't seen my NATO stock in 15 years and never used it. I also recently turned 50 so I can remember 3 things at a time, if I tried to remember the exact nature of the NATO stock I'd forget to put on pants before going outside and I don't think anybody wants that.

That’s good to know. There are just a lot of threads and videos about X95 accuracy. I’ve never owned an X95 but my Tavor had exceptional accuracy. It did gas me when shooting suppressed though. Most report the same thing with the X95. The problem is mostly likely the opposite side ejection port. A lot of gas comes out there. Glad you had no issues. I just got tried of buying aftermarket parts for my Tavor and the factory rail needed replaced because it’s too low. It was a money pit.

I shot a Tavor SAR for about a year at our local match and have shot a AUG frequently at the same match. Personally, the AUG fits me better, but the Tavor is a very good design as well and has excellent ergonomics.

The Tavor isn’t a copy of the AUG any more than the AK is a copy of the StG44. They look alike because the designers had similar goals but came from different directions. The AUG is a short stroke design with two operating rods in bushings in the receiver with a toothed slide to prevent the bolt from turning during stripping. The Tavor uses a long stroke piston with the bolt running on metal receiver rails with a rod to prevent the bolt from locking during stripping.

The Tavor is an excellent design that’s well made that I’d rate as more soldier proof than the AUG, but it isn’t as flexible. The AUG’s flexibility comes at the expense of complexity.

I am one of those guys haha, but I run standard gi triggers just fine, and my ptr91 trigger feels ok to me so the AUG trigger shouldn't be too hard to get accustomed to.

Thank you all, I have read all the replies and now I am sure that I'll be purchasing the AUG very soon.

I would never take on over an AR carbine as a primary "go to" but the AUG system has a LOT to offer.

My Steyr AUG A3 M1 is most definitely my ‘go to’ rifle. It has been updated with Magpul, Manticore, VLTOR and soon, Corvus Defencio parts. The barrel has been cut, recontoured and rethreaded to 1/2-28 by ADCO Firearms. I just a bought a couple Magpul AUS 30-round magazines to try out. So far, they work very well in the rifle. The AUG is a great design. It’s probably one of the smoothest operating 5.56mm rifles there is.

    AUG a2 owner..

18 inch is the best size for it.

Dave Fortier the gun writer did some chrono and 16 to 18 is fine.

24 looks cool and Id like one day but not at a trillion dollars.
