    Hey all,

I want to replace my BCM 16in mid with the Steyr AUG as my new HD rifle. I want a shorter rifle but want to keep the benefits of the 16in barrel so I am looking to get a bullpup. The AUG is the only one that appeals to me. In 09 I was in Kandahar, and had a chance to work with some Aussies, I loved the AUGs they were issued and since then have always wanted one. But I have a few questions about the AUG A3 M1.

    1. Are they chambered in 5.56 or .223?
    2. Should I go standard stock or NATO?
    - I was thinking standard because I am under the impression the NATO stock doesn't have a bolt hold open?
    3. I heard the Steyr magazines are great, is this true?
    4. My HD ammo choice is SPEER GDSP 64gr, will the AUG cycle these fine?
    5. Anything else I should know about the AUG before potentially buying one?

    Thanks for the help!

Typing on my phone so excuse the grammar.

The aug is 556 regardless of the stamp on the barrel.

The gold dot will work fine.

I would use Steyr 42 rounders. Hey are cheap and as they don’t hang down very far and they are up close to the body.

Assuming you are right handed. All you need is a light and a sling. Left handed you will need a bolt.

Thank you KTR03 for the info!

Yes I am right handed, have an extra surefire scout mini I'm gonna put on it, just need to get another aim point and back up irons, looking at the full length rail models.

    1) As mentioned, they are 556.
2 &3) Steyr mags are great, but different. The NATO stock has a BHO, but comes RH only. It can’t be flipped to LH.
    4) My AUG has cycled everything from 40gr Fiochi JHPs to 77gr OTM and everything in between. The only time I’ve needed to switch the rifle to adverse gas setting was some Tula steel case on a cold day. It still cycled but just wouldn’t lock open on a empty mag.
    5) It’s different than a AR and has a different manual of arms. The AUG seems to fit almost everyone even though you can’t really change the ergonomics.

I have both stocks for each of my AUG's. The standard stock and magazines are superior however. They run pretty much anything you can feed them and are very reliable. Size wise they are compact but have a longer length of pull. They weigh more but that weight is shifted more to the back. Trigger sucks but you can get the Neu Trigger which slicks up the trigger pull quite a bit. Skip the factory optics, just get one with the long rail and add whatever optics you want. Honestly, if all you had were Steyr AUG's and Glock's- you could survive whatever is thrown at you. I've thought about dumping my AR's entirely after getting AUG's.

Also there is no advantage to the 20 inch barrel. I cronograpjed a bunch of loads. Some were actually slower out of the 20 inch barrel.

I have one. It has been a good rifle. Mine has a standard stock. Mags are well-made and very robust. It does weigh more than an AR but is quite soft shooting and reliable.

I am pretty sure the barrels are made by FN for Steyr and are a high quality chrome-lined unit with a 5.56 chamber. Mine digests all manner of 223 and 5.56 with no issues.

I also put a Neu-Trigger in mine which reduced the weight a little bit but made it much, much smoother.

I had a Aimpoint Pro on mine but what I really want is a low-mount 3x ACOG.

While it took a bit of getting used to, the registration are good and controls are reasonably placed.

They are 5.56 just like a Colt.
I would go standard stock, AUG mags are high quality and affordable and NATO stocks don't have a bolt hold open last I checked.
Most barrels are 1/9 so will handle most ammo options.

Mag changes won't be as fast and going weak side requires some getting used to but those are the only negatives I can think of.

If you are one of those people who replaces a stock AR trigger you might have a problem.
