.45 Colt Blackhawks are a workhorse of a gun. The New Models (model name, not those necessarily those of recent production), can handle decently heavy loads. The only upgrade that I’d recommend is an aftermarket base pin such as the Belt Mountain #5. Under heavy recoil, the factory pin can back out and tie up the gun.

If you’re willing to have some work done, I have played with a Redhawk done up by Hamilton Bowen. That revolver was slick, very nicely done. Heirloom quality work.

While I think the Model 25 is the right way to go, it should be mentioned that revolvers chambered in 454 Casull or 460 will also chamber 45 colt.

4" skinny barrel. It recoils a bit but is great for packing all day. It would be a great companion gun to your Marlin.
A 250-270 gr. Keith type, cast bullet (gas check or flat base) at around 1100 FPS kills about like a .30/06 to 50 yds. with decent shot placement.

I have a pair of 625-6 that were the last of the "no MIM, no lock" guns that I've used hog and deer hunting.
I changed out FS's to FO (we hunt in timber/heavy brush and the FO is easy to pick up in shadow/low light), did "trigger jobs", opened cylinder throats and installed Herretts grips that I modified.

Sidetrack WARNING: Nice grips. Did you
Ever pick up any Craig Speigel wood grips. I have one pair. HEAVEN ON EARTH

Spegel makes some of the best PB.

I run Spegels on all my P-35 "carry guns". I prefer his Delrin for practicality, as they're bullet proof- but his wood grips are gorgeous.
My preference for the Herretts on the MG's is they cover the backstrap. For me that helps with recoil on these revolvers.

I'll have to study up on the Herretts. I want a set for my SW M&P 8 shot 357 gun. The plastic grips are pretty good, but I'd like a better set for that gun.

OP, if you need to go "cowboy" and have one caliber, the Ruger Redhawk/Blackhawk are a decent option. Personally, I'd go go Smith and get a .44 mag. The .44 is an extremely versatile round, especially if you re-load. You can tame it to a .44 special load, or go all the way to hot magnum with heavy cast bullets for bigger game.

Sigh... Just when I was geting over my serious want for a S&W mountain gun, Gaijin has to show up and post .44 porn. Those are BEAUTIFUL. Like C-Grunt says though, one will spend about 1K for a good one that is pre-lock and pre-mim. The way I see it though, old S&W's are like property. They aren't any more being made, and the price is just going to keep going up. Hopefully I can pull one off this year... The want it strong.

Meanwhile, my late model 629 V-Comp does fine. I'm over the lock issue... This thing shoots like a dream. More S&W porn included...

Those Performance Center guns are as good as a S&W- gets short of high dollar "custom" work.
I bet yours shoots as good as it looks DS- and it looks really good.

I've shot PC revolvers in the past; all were exceptionally accurate and had very good double actions. The smith's usually have exceptionally good single action in their garden variety guns.

Yes, Sir. It shoots as well if not better than most earlier model S&Ws. Imho, it's mechanically perfect. I can live with the lock in this case. I still have to get one or two of the older pre-lock/mim models too though. I went though the police academy with model 66-2 back in the 80's. I will ALWAYS be a wheel gun guy at heart. Love your collection!
