    Malaysian Surplus 7.62x51

    Hi all
Went shooting today and picked up some 7.62x51 Malaysian ammo. I had aome ammo left over and wound up only shooting 20 rounds of the Malaysian stuff. It was manufactured in 1981 and the primers are crimped on but I see now NATO marking. Ammo shot OK from what I could tell except the fact it seemed a little extra sparky. It is 146 grain FMJ and I paid $160 for a can of 300. I shot it with my SOCOM 16 CQB. Is this stuff safe in the long run?

I shot quite a bit of Malaysian 7.62x51mm made in the 1980's through a M1A and a few hundred rounds of it through my RRA LAR-8. It consistently shot sub 8" groups at 300 yards out of the M1A using iron sights. The LAR-8, equipped with a fixed 4 power scope, shot 3" or better at 300 yards most of the time. A bad group with the LAR-8 at 300 yards was under 4-1/2".

For comparison, group sizes with PPU 146g FMJ were double that size at 300 yards. Reloads tailored for both rifles did not group much better than the 1980's vintage Malaysian.

Not bad all things considered. I ask since .308 is very expensive in NY and ordering online is a pain. I plan to get my ammo from this LGS from now on, $160 for 300 rounds isn’t bad.

Thanks for the review of it. I'd been on the fence about trying some myself. Looks like I'll have to give it a try.

Shot a bunch of it yesterday at the Range. I’m trying to distinguish if it’s corrosive ammo or not. Here’s an inside of the shell casing.

most of what I read indicates it is not. I found some claiming yes and others saying no. Looks like mid 70s onward is a clear no though

    thanks
