    Israel proves the NRA's arguments

    Via Israel National News:

    Israel proves the NRA's arguments

In reality, Israel's gun policy is living proof of the arguments the American gun lobby has been making for years.

Wednesday's horrific shooting in Florida has reignited the gun rights debate in the United States over the Second Amendment to the US Constitution, adopted in 1791, which states:: "... the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

In the past, proponents of limiting civilian access to firearms have extolled Israel as having the proper approach to limiting mass shootings, pointing to the numerous legal hoops Israelis must jump through in order to be granted a gun license.

"In Israel, gun ownership is a privilege rather than a right," wrote Public Radio International in November. "There is no such thing as a right to bear arms in Israel," the Huffington Post preached after the 2016 shooting in an Orlando nightclub that left 50 dead.

Newsweek praised Israel for obligating its citizens to "show genuine cause to carry a firearm, such as self-defense or hunting". The message is clear: Israel has the right approach in curtailing access to firearms, and the United States would be well advised to tread the same path.

Israel is not an ideal example because even though every "citizen" is required to do a year of military service, they still had to ease restrictions for civilians to obtain firearms when gun control led to increases in attacks on civilians.

Another problem is Israel doesn't tolerate criminal subcultures to the extent we do. There is no MS13 dealing drugs, jacking cars and engaging in home invasions. They have actual terrorist cells operating in their country but so do we and armed citizens generally have little or no impact on groups that Federal anti terrorist groups have difficulty dealing with.

Now you can simply reduce things down to "threat to the public" to have an equivalency of some kind, especially knife attacks in public, and "good guy with a gun" can bring that to an abrupt stop. But again there are still differences.

I've said it many times. Geography plays a huge part in social, economic and governmental operations of a country. Every time I hear someone say we should be like Israel, Norway or Denmark my eyes roll and stick firmly in the back of my head. Solutions for Israel, roughly the size of New Jersey, basically won't work in a country the physical size of our country. We have to create our own unique solutions.

BTW.. Will's link doesn't work so I really can't comment on the article.

I had to take down some spyware blockers to get it to open. A lot of people simply won't click links anymore because they don't want that crap on their computer. I only opened it because I was getting ready to do an update and reboot so it didn't really matter.

I think either way comparing our country to others whether it be in favor of gun rights or gun control is the wrong way of doing it.

We stand alone in our history and truths. Our truths are not the truths of Israel, Australia, Canada or Mexico. There is not comparison to be made that would support the argument either way if you are trying to hold a honest dialogue.

Israel is not an example of how to do guns.

We have terrible gun laws, which need to be modified in a big way to allow greater gun ownership.

Israel is an example of the few guns in civilian hands have stopped a lot of terrorism. The last time I checked we only had around 275,000 legal pistols in the country and almost no rifles owned by individuals.

We COULD do it right if we'd take the best of American spirit and know-how, and combine it with some of the hard-won Israeli experience. But we've farmed out our security to "professionals" who have forgotten who they work for.

    Many people miss this.

    Demographics.

I've heard so many times people here use Switzerland as an example of a nation that has private ownership of firearms and little crime. The Swiss don't have our demographics.

Most people don't bother to actually look up anything about Swiss firearms laws and just go of what little tidbits they know. Demographics aside Swiss have some restrictive gun laws
