So i did get to tighten the gas keys on a buddies bushmaster at the range yesterday. What a pile of junk. The buffer is not marked, but feels like paper in the shape of a buffer. Recoil is ridiculously obnoxious.

you want the collective knowledge of this board/forum...

Get a top tier brand and save yourself $$$ and heartache, and PITA repair time. Camry and Accord cost more than their cheaper counterparts for a reason. RELIABILITY.

That said, there is a point of diminishing returns. Find the cheapest top tier brand gun you can and get that and build it up over time.

Better to start with a prime real estate property than a cheap lot in the ghetto.

A quality gun will hold up over time, go down less often, and have you spitting out fewer 4 letter works when it doesn't work.

Your $$$, spend it how you want, but the people have made it clear not to buy cheap shit.

Colt/BCM isn't high end Gucci name brand... they're the Camry & Accord level of AR15.

If a few more $100 is too much to spend on a quality tool, consider picking up a S&W .22 instead.

Ammo is expensive, repairing and getting a crappy unreliable gun to run is expensive too.

Your budget, your money, your choice.

Artificial price points are just that. If you can't afford a good AR, buy a ****ing shotgun or get a Nagant and play Russian sniper. If you are struggling to to decide which steamy turd you are going to buy, you won't be able to afford ammo, magazines, and all the other options.

BCM, Colt and SIONICS are the mid-priced ARs, if you doubt that look at LMT, KAC, Radian, etc.

I agree wholeheartedly with titsonritz and Iraqgunz. After my first armorer's class this past week, I now understand even better the differences between the mid-priced brands that are actually built to spec (BCM, Sionics, Daniel Defense, even Colt[*]) and the lower-tier brands. I would not in good conscience suggest someone buy one of the lower tier guns, but rather he should save his money a bit longer and get one of the known good setups.
[*] Nothing wrong with Colt; I simply have a pathological hatred of the sear blocks in their lowers on principle.

There WERE Colts going for that price a while back. Show me a link to an actual in-stock Colt complete rifle under $700 available right now.

I wonder if it would be more helpful to classify manufacturers in the following manner:

Premium (extra cool/“Gucci”)
Standard (Colt, BCM, DD, Sionics, Centurion - $800-1700)
Budget (generally OK, but lower QC/slightly lower quality parts/unknowns: Aero, S&W, Ruger, PSA - $600-1000)
Unacceptable (Anderson, etc)

Prices do not demonstrate quality, but quality can demand some price.

Skip the Wylde chamber, and buy a Colt 6920. Spending the extra $200 on the Colt is worth it IMO.

That's what I would do. Hard to beat with the price as low as they are now. If the sear block is an issue look for a LNIB 6520. I believe the don't have a sear block. My next choice if you can afford it would be BCM. I wouldn't consider a DPMS to be in the same class with either Colt or BCM.
