    Holy Shiite Batman! Five months to train a grunt, from start to finish?

    When I went in it was 13 weeks for Infantry OSUT. My cycle in particular was 12 weeks because we graduated a week before Christmas and apparently it wasn't worth the cost to the Army to bring us back for only one week so they crammed it in over 12 weeks. At some point it went to 14 weeks.

    Now 22 weeks? Damn...….

    Making a more lethal soldier...

    More weapons training... absolutely.

    CLS... saves a week of training at their unit and keeps soldiers in the fight.

    More drill and ceremony maneuvers... great innovation for the Crimean or maybe the US Civil War. That way the young soldiers know what “refuse the right” means when fighting for Little Round Top.

    There’s more to being a Soldier than just weapons training and CLS. Drill and ceremonies has been neglected for too many decades. Same with Army and military history, Laws of Land Warfare, Code of Conduct and the Constitution. Not to be That Guy, but scout OSUT back in the day was 18 weeks and we went over all that at the schoolhouse. That was what Red Phase was all about.

    I don't know. I was in basic and in my opinion, the one week we dedicated fully to Drill and ceremony was a huge waste. I think that one week could have been better spent on pretty much any field training or range time. 10 weeks felt rushed, and seeing how many people were fumbling around with the important things (battle drills, land nav, and anything else needed in combat), I was shocked at how many graduated.

    I hate to say it, but it made me very nervous that I could potentially be somewhere in the world where these people are supposed to have my back. I can really care less that some chick can march well, but what does that really matter if she can't lift you up/get you to safety in a bad situation?

    I'm not trying to say that drill and ceremony should be tossed out or completely disregarded, but we are all rifleman first and then our own MOS second right?

    Although I can appreciate this part;
    The new OSUT program will include expanded weapons training, increased vehicle-platform familiarization, extensive combatives training and a 40-hour combat-lifesaver certification course, said Hedrick.
    Further, the change will include increased time in the field during both day and night operations
    This;
    include an increased emphasis on drill and ceremony maneuvers.
    Makes little sense to me.

    If we have to be depressingly realistic, yes, it's probably a bigger part of that extra time than they want to admit...

    What does all this say about small unit leadership and training at squad, platoon and company level?

    I do think that is an excellent question. As a former squad leader, I viewed that as a crucial part of my role - training and integrating the new guys with the rest of the herd.

    No more making fun of a private's private's and why it's ok if he wants to be a she. Now that "Bad" Brad Manning has completed his 35 year sentence he is available for a variety of themed seminars that will produce a more sensitive and caring professional soldier. "Why feelings are more important than national security" is extremely popular and might become a standard program at West Point.
