We all know what the report of an AR15 sounds like. It's loud-- about 140dB. Gem-tech says the HALO reduces the sound signature by about 32dB, which gets it down to 108dB-- just above the threshold that causes hearing damage. So, it's not hearing safe-- but darn close.
Thanks for your review, but I have to make a correction to your data. The 140dB is not an unsuppressed AR. The 140dB Benchmark is the pain threshold claimed by some wine-drinking, chocolate eating European dude.
The average for an unsuppressed AR is around the 165dB mark.
The 32dB noise reduction claimed by Gemtech's HALO is possible given the right conditions, ammo, elevation, humidity and the dB Gods, but realistically, the majority of the time, it will be closer to the 28-29dB area.
Just for a comparrison, a suppressed .22LR shooting subsonic ammunition is around the 116dB range.
