    Relocating/Engraving manufacturer markings

My support thumb rests right where Walther put their engravings on my PPQ. I’d like to stipple that area.

Can I have the information re-engraved elsewhere and be compliant with whatever requirements exist?

Have you tried slapping some grip tape on it? As far as an answer to your question, my wild guess would be the ATF wants original markings. Seeing as how our government agencies love bureaucracy, I would imagine there would be multiple flaming hoops to jump through in order to remark it.

I’ve got pieces of Talon grip over them now, but they don’t stay in place long (small piece, slight twisting of thumb).

I’ve never tried it on that area. I have some on the underside of a trigger guard and it’s stayed good. If you get a fine enough point for a soldering iron, you might be able to stipple some and leave the markings legible. Just a thought.

I would suggest contacting the ATF and ask them. There is a requirement as to how deep markings have to be done, but I could not find anything regarding transferring the manufacturer's markings to another location on a firearm. If you ever want to find out something, it is always best to go to the source and not rely on hearsay or speculation.

    What engraving?
Is there a law you cannot remove non SN markings?

Good point. I was thinking he was talking about a serial number on the frame.

I may be off base, but I thought manufacturer and location both had to be present.

Everything I’ve read on the ATF’s site says that is correct. What I couldn’t find is an allowance to relocate those markings. My guess is get used to replacing grip tape.
